Starting out the race on a strong footing, the women’s team attacked hard in the first stage with Katie Hall taking the win and Ruth Winder taking second.
I’m happy to take the win today for the team. We had a great tactical plan. Lauren Hall, Lauretta Hanson and Diana Penuela made it hard going into the final hill. I attacked with 5 km to go, knowing that if I got caught early Tayler Wiles was ready to attack and if it came down to a sprint, Ruth Winder would win.
Overall the stage was fairly quiet until Lauretta Hanson, Diana Peñuela, and Lauren Hall started to ratchet up the pace heading into the final climb. This allowed Katie the opportunity to attack and hold a small gap heading into the finish.
It was another great display of teamwork with everyone playing their part and Katie finishing it off in style.
At the end of the stage Katie held the overall leader and sprint point jersey, while Ruth Winder held the white best young rider’s jersey.
