Stage 2 Review
More crashes again saw Luis Leon Sanchez abandon and a few Mitchelton-Scott riders hit the deck, but more importantly the yellow jersey crashed on the final turn and it was Peter Sagan taking a chaotic victory.
Stage 3 Preview
So we have the team time trial around Cholet. Some GC guys are going to lose a lot of time today to the likes of Chris Froome and Richie Porte.
Sky – With a tad weaker lineup at the Criterium du Dauphine, they smashed the TTT. Shouldn’t really look at that performance though because BMC were weakened and didn’t even have Porte or Van Garderen. On paper though, Sky is the favourite and if they don’t finish top two, something has gone wrong with them.
BMC – Have been the best time trialing team for the last few years. This is a strong lineup they have. They will also have the knowledge of the time Sky put up as they start 5th compared to Sky 2nd. This gives them a slight advantage.
Mitchelton-Scott – Before the Tour, I had Mitchelton Scott coming third behind these two teams. Now I’m not so sure. They have a strong lineup but Adam Yates has hit the deck twice and Daryl Impey and Luke Durbridge fell hard yesterday. They could be feeling the effects today. It won’t be about the win for them. It will be about limiting the losses to Porte and Froome.
Quick-Step Floors – Leading the team are Bob Jungles, Yves Lampaert and Julian Alaphilippe and therefore cannot be underestimated. A few years ago they used to dominate the TTT and still are reasonable at it. The course does suit them. I can’t see them winning though, but getting on the podium is likely.
Team Sunweb – Tom Dumoulin is the reigning Time Trial World Champion and will pull this team hard. They have a reasonable team against the clock, and are definitely a threat.
Lotto NL Jumbo – With Primoz Roglic leading this team they have to be talked about as potential podium contenders. Steven Kruijswijk will be suited to this course as well and they have a reasonable team.
It is going to be close between BMC and Sky. There won’t be much in this. There also won’t be much between Quick-Step and Sunweb for third position either. Will be great value.
- Quick-Step Floors
- Lotto NL Jumbo
The two head to heads got up yesterday which brought a winning day despite Gaviria not winning.
