With 85 points up for the KOM jersey today (45 for the first 3 climbs and 20 or 40 for the last – depending if they double it or not), now is the day for someone to really stamp their authority. Even if they can’t win the last climb, picking up 45 points on the first three will be massive for this jersey.

Finishing on the iconic Alp d’Huez, this should be a GC day. Chris Froome loves to win the iconic stages and he will love to take this one. It’s also the last day in the Alps, and with a few transitional days following this, it’s the perfect time for teams to try and put sky under pressure with an all out assault. If they can pull it off, we could see the GC guys all together on the penultimate climb.

So let’s look at the favourites for the stage.

Chris Froome – Covered a lot of attacks today and looked strong. Loves to win on iconic climbs. With Thomas now having a solid lead, Thomas will just sit back and Froome will try and take this stage.

Nairo Quintana – He needs to attack here. Whether or not he gets away is another story.

Primoz Roglic – Has looked strong and is not without a chance.

Steven Kruijswijk – Normally one that doesn’t attack much, on Dutch Corner, maybe he will try an attack?

Tom Dumoulin – looked strong today but this climb doesn’t really suit him.

Dan Martin – Is still looking good. Not a threat to the jersey so if he attacks he could be allowed a little bit of leeway whilst everyone looks at each other.

There is a possibility someone from the break may hold on, so these are the riders that will try and feature in the break to win the stage;

Ion Izagirre, Lillian Calmejane, Warren Barguil, Jelle Vanendert, Nicoas Edet, David Gaudu

If anyone from the break wins, I think it will be Gaudu or Izagirre depending on who they are up against. Gaudu rested yesterday, so did Izagirre, so both should be fresh. Although Gaudu taking victory in his first Tour de France at his age won’t come easy.

It will be a Sky 1-2 finish today. Froome will attack and win solo. Thomas will sit on wheels and launch a late attack to take second place.

  1. Chris Froome
  2. Geraint Thomas
  3. Daniel Martin
